some finishes for Seabiscuit

I've been hard at work trying to get my Seabiscuit book done. Things are going slowly but that's because I want to get it right! Below are a few finishes.

  1. Those paintings are so great! The eyeballs are hilarious, especially in contrast to the seriousness of the scene.

  2. I looooove the eyeballs! It's amazing how much emotion they show, but you nailed it!

  3. I love these, too -- everything about them -- they're beautiful paintings and I love the emotion and drama. You really capture the feeling of wanting to win.

  6. Love them, love (like everyone) the cartoon eyeballs. It unexpected, I think that is why they are so effective (aside from just being hilarious and fun to look at)
Is it just me or is there a 3D effect/feel going on in the paintings? Meghan are the horses done in a different medium then the backgrounds or is it just aging on my part?:) Whatever, I love them!!!

  8. All of my illustrations are done in Acrylic. In my art, especially lately, I"m doing what Disney does by making the front characters really cartoony but the backgrounds more realistic.

  10. That always fascinated me as a kid- watching looney tunes or disney movies where cartoony characters walked around in realistic backgrounds that don't move- I imagined thats what it would be like to step into a painting on the wall.

  11. Anna, do you think it's a bad thing?

  12. No not at all- I think its really interesting for kids to see that the two styles can co-exist like that, to contemplate the differences between them. And besides that I just like the aesthetic, its nostalgic for me!

I also think that you are doing it in a more subtle way anyhow- I hadn't quite put my finger on it before you pointed it out. But now I see how it adds to the appeal of the paintings.

  13. making the front characters really cartoony but the backgrounds more realistic.

Ahhh, that must be the reason I was getting that 3D feeling!!! I LIKE it! The main characters really pop out, while the background stays... in the background:)
