I'm THIS close to quitting making books. Drama. I'm sick of it. I'm going to be a painter. And yes, I did say I'd stop posting... and this is my way of "not" posting... by posting.
p.s - the painting isn't done yet. 5 gold stars if you guess who it is and what movie she's acting in! This is part of my new "drama movie" series.
It's hauntingly beautiful, my guess, Betty Davis, "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane"?

I was thinking "Whatever happened to Baby Jane" also, but thought it might be Joan Crawford.

Oh, you guys are sooo close. It is Whatever happened to baby jane... but think a version that was in color! Perhaps it's too obscure?

ReplyDeleteRight you are! It was a made for TV version of Baby Jane. I remembered it as a kid so I ordered it at work--cost like 5 bucks! Then while my sister and I were watching it on the "big screen," my sister said her crazy face would make for a good photo... and I one up-ed her and painted it.

ReplyDeleteBeezer, great eye and "after" you said Lynn Redgrave, then YES, the painting IS of Lynn Redgrave.... but I never would have guessed it on my own, I was stuck on making it into either Joan or Betty. (preconcieved notions huh?:)

ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw it, I thought of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE -- that demented expression? It's amazing to me that we ALL thought of this movie from the image. But the actress didn't look like either Joan Crawford or Bette Davis to me.
Thanks for telling about the Redgrave sisters' version -- I love both actresses and can't wait to see it. I saw a clip on youtube (the scene at the piano), you NAILED her!

You're a very talented painter. What about movie star and musician portraits for editorial illustration? Like for Rolling Stone..etc. Course that is probably too much drama too.

ReplyDeleteI haven't yet sold anything. I don't know if I've created enough to part with it (the children's illus. is a different matter). I would like to make enough paintings to see if I could get a gallery to represent me.
As for editorial: that's what my concentration was in school. The problem is that stock photography and illus. has pretty much taken over. Most of my favorite editorial illustrators have moved on to the fine arts.

By the way-- I have to say that I'm surprised that ANONE figured out who this was in the painting... or even that some of you knew it was Baby Jane. I mean, if she were holding the doll, then I'd be less surprised.
