do you hang up your own artwork?

After my recent nuptials, I have been reorganizing my living space, especially my studio. One of the things we are doing is redecorating--which means new art and photographs on the walls. In my living room, I used to have framed illustrations of my own art. They were leftovers from gallery shows and exhibits and while they looked fine, I always felt a little strange having my own art up. I used think it looked somewhat...self-centered? But at the same time, when I go over to fellow artist's home, I expect to see their art on the wall. Home decor is a reflection of person, and what shows that better than their own art?

So as I ponder what to put up next on my walls, what do you think? Do you hang up your own artwork?

I've been learning about and experimenting with photography for the last couple years, and, yes, I have framed and hung a few of my own photos--the few that I have thought turned out particularly well.

My parents were potters and my mother sculpted in clay. I can't imagine growing up without their work in the house. It was so much a part of who they - and by extension, we - were. Hang it up proudly.

Grace,

You "used to" have framed illustrations of your art in your living room? You mean you took your art off the walls? I loved looking at your paintings! I think you should hang up your own art!!!

Case closed.

I do. I have to store the pieces somewhere.

Yes! In my home office I have one white wall with magnetic strips along it, so I can change the artwork depending on my mood, or use something that inspires me. At the moment I have a "Get Well Soon" sign made for me when I was a kid, because my WIP is based on events of that time.

I am also a potter, so my pots are all over the house, mostly in the kitchen. There are two here on my desk. One is holding pens and pencils, the other is for chocolate. I have my own watercolor paintings framed and hung in a few places too.

I have a few pieces of my own art up, mostly because I've run out of places to store it!

I rarely put my own work up. If I'm pleased with something I sometimes keep it up on my mantel for a while because I feel the need to stare at it and absorb it. But eventually I take it down. I think it's because I find it hard to stop critiquing myself, so things nag at me if I'm looking at them all the time.

The few things I do have up in the public parts of my house are mostly part of a 'collage' of other people's work. It would be too dull and consistent if it were all mine -- I like having a nice mix and seeing different styles interacting. I have a bulletin board in my studio, and that's where I keep my current work rotating.

Have fun redecorating! Post photos!

I agree 100% with MotherReader! I grew up with my mom's needlework on the walls and her sculptures around the house. Strangely enough, it made art-making seem both somewhat magical (HOW did she make things that looked so nice?!) and yet completely natural...

I do...and it's kind of wierd. First I see the piece as something I had to finish for a deadline, and fixate on what wanted to change or do differently. But as time goes by it looks more like "art". I have also run out of room for art especially from previous shows!

I hang up my non kids' book artwork -- my photography and paintings and stuff like that. I don't want to look at the book stuff.
