A Found Poem by Naomi Shihab Nye (VIDEO)

Here’s a video of Naomi Shihab Nye reciting a poem she composed using things that her young son had said. She says she didn’t make any of it up herself.

I still hear many absurd statements just like these. Now, however, they take the form of the unanswerable question. Is this just boys? I certainly hope not!

Thanks so much for sharing this.

I love this! Thanks so much for posting it. I wish my toes were still dictionaries . . . :)

I love Naomi Shihab Nye! I had never read "One Boy Told." I'm so glad I came across the video last night.

Tanita, it was lovely to hear her reading her poem--especially such a humorous one.

Tricia,

It isn't just boys. I remember one of my young students sitting with a quizzical look on her face as she sat drawing a picture. A little later she came up to me and asked: "Do frogs have lips?" That's just one of many funny things I hear kids ask or say over the years. I wish I had written them all down.

Jama,

Maybe your toes still are--you've just forgotten how to use them in that way.

I love this too. She is such a great poet - and it sounds like her son got some of those genes. I try to write down what my boys say too - it's priceless.

Andi,

Nye is definitely one of my favorite poets.

Have you ever read any of Hilda Conkling's poems that were published when she was a child? (I believe she had two books of poetry published.) Her mother used to write down the things she said too. The interesting thing is that she never became an adult poet.
