on my desk

I've been distracted lately, so I thought I'd just post what's on my desk. This painting is really on my desk as the paper is taped onto the table as they don't make watercolor block large enough for the image. It'll be a special gatefold (three page spread) in my "Bringing in the New Year" book. I'm quite proud of it, as it took forever...

Here's a better image of it with the folder I made for the art. It is roughly 8x 30 inches, water-soluable gouache (I can't use acrylic, I take so long thinking about what colors I'm going to use it that dries up on the paintbrush). The book will be published (if I get it all done in time, hopefully!) Jan or Feb of 2008.

Here's a detail of it:

And a closer detail of it. This is why it took so long, I put pattern over pattern on everything:

grace,

this is so beautiful! colors are scrumptious. do you work in gouache? if so, how do manage not to ruin your pieces with the inevitable water drops, lifted color, coffee stains, etc? i love gouache colors, but moved over to acrylics after one too many mishaps.

congrats on another lovely, piece!

Grace,

It's gorgeous!!!! When is this book due out? I make mention of your DIM SUM FOR EVERYONE in my China Activity book (sending in the draft to my editor next week), but this Chinese New Year book looks perfect to mention, too. You can email me details if you like, to just kid ink (no spaces) at yahoo dot com.

Beautiful piece Grace! What are the dimensions? Love the flow of the dragon and the kids surrounding it. How about a close-up detail shot?

Thanks for sharing,

How beautiful! I will try to remember to look for it when it's out, for my winter holidays bibliography.

Thanks for the close-ups!! Wow! What detail. I love your layering of pattern and how the clothing pattern relates to the background pattern. Couldn't tell from the first shot how much detail was in the background. I was a little overwhelmed doing six kids in my last piece; I can see why it took forever when you’re doing that many.

Nice work,
gail
